John Mark Lancaster known as Mark Lancaster (born 1970) is a British Conservative Party politician. He was elected as Member of Parliament for the North East Milton Keynes constituency at the 2005 general election, unseating former MP Brian White of the Labour Party.

Previously a Conservative Party whip, since July 2007 he has been a Shadow Minister for International Development under current Conservative Party leader David Cameron.[2][3][4]

He had previously contested Nuneaton at the 2001 general election, and been a councillor. Outside of politics, he has worked in the fireworks industry and served in the regular British Army as a major in the Royal Engineers. Since leaving, he has continued to serve in the Territorial Army, and retains the rank of Major. He was educated at Kimbolton School.

During the 2006 parliamentary recess, he served with a Territorial Army unit in Afghanistan.[2]

[edit] Political views

Mark Lancaster has stated his disagreement with the UK government's policy on the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In an interview with the BBC, he stated "It may well be much harder to get the British public to back other overseas adventures by the military because of what's happened in Iraq."[5]

He is a strong supporter of the Make Poverty History campaign, stating that it "opened [his] eyes to the world of international development"; he also states that his experience in Afghanistan has contributed to his commitment to British participation in international development programmes.[4]
