[edit] Biography
His first reading was in 1973. In 1976 along with Roberto Bolaño, Cuauhtémoc Méndez Estrada, Ramon Méndez Estrada, Bruno Montané, Rubén Medina, Juan Esteban Harrington, Oscar Altamirano, Jose Peguero, Guadalupe Ochoa, Jose Vicente Anaya, Edgar Altamirano, Elmer Santana and Mara Larrosa he founded the infrarrealismo (infrarealism), a literary movement of vanguard and true rupture with Mexican literary establishment, which obtained stylistically in some of its members, although Santiago was the maximum exponent and with greater stylistic purity. By some, he is considered one of the most talented Mexican poets of the second half of the 20th century. His poems are complex and highly metaphorical, erudite and with constant references to perception, trips and long walks. Santiago wrote his poems in search of an aesthetic of signs, much like the calligrams of Guillaume Apollinaire. The majority of his works are still unpublished.
Roberto Bolaño used Santiago as one of the protagonists in his novel The Savage Detectives in the personage of Ulises Lima, a poet who like Santiago was an adventurer, an eccentric, and an opponent of the traditional forms of the writers sold to the state scholarships with a snobbish attitude. This enigma who everywhere found enemies due to his sincerity and open criticism of what he deemed inferior forms of poetry, the literary elite, and the poets themselves. He has gained slight if any recognition until today, though he is recognized and lauded by the recorded oral testimonies of his "comrades-in-arms".
