Marina Ortíz de Gaete

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marina Ortíz de Gaete was the wife of Pedro de Valdivia. She was born around 1519, in Plasensia, Spain. Although she has virtually been forgotten, she played a role in the downfall of Inés de Suárez, her husband's mistress.

Marina was a pretty girl with long blonde hair and blue eyes, and, at the age of fourteen, around 1533, she attracted the attention of the soldier Pedro De Valdivia, who married her shortly afterwards. Although the marriage had originally been for love, or at least affection, Pedro soon tired of his wife, and left her in 1535 to embark to Peru.

In 1554, Pedro was ordered to leave Ines, on the grounds that he had forsaken his wife for her. Marina was sent for, but, on arriving, discovered Pedro had died after being attacked and tortured by The Indians, and his supposed treasure had disappeard. She was introduced to Ines Suarez during this time, and for the rest of her life Ines looked after her one time rival.

Isabel Allende's novel Ines of My Soul includes Marina as a character.
