Margene Adkins (born April 30, 1947 in Fort Worth, Texas) is a former American college football, National Football League, and Canadian Football League player.
Adkins played college football at Henderson County Junior College in Athens, Texas then while still a teenager joined the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League where as a wide receiver he was part of one of the great teams in League history that included stars such as Russ Jackson, Ron Stewart, Whit Tucker, Vic Washington and Bo Scott. In 1969, Adkins was voted to the CFL All-Star team after setting a regular season record for the highest average gain per pass reception at 25.0 yards, a record that stood for twenty-eight years (broken by Milt Stegall). He was part of the Rough Riders 1969 Grey Cup winning team.
Adkins was drafted in the second round of the 1970 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He joined the Cowboys for the 1970 season but with star wide receivers such as Lance Alworth and Bob Hayes, the Cowboys used Adkins primarily as a punt and kick returner during his two seasons with the team. He was part of the Cowboys' Super Bowl VI championship team in 1971 and the following year he went to the New Orleans Saints where he led the team in kickoff returns with 1,020 yards and a 23.7 average carry. Injuries hampered his career and he played his final season in 1973 with the New York Jets.
Adkins is working as a firefighter for Lockheed Martin in his hometown of Fort Worth.
