Marseilles in France on the Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of Navigation) of Piri Reis

This map is not that accurate and has serious deviations from the real world:

  • On the left the mouth of the Rhone (it might have changed quite a lot since then) and the surrounding towns.
  • Then in somewhat false orientation the chained harbour of Marsailles (truely the harbour opens in western direction),
  • The cliff cape south of Marsailles is close to reality even if not perfectly correct.

Attention: from now on several coast areas were not documented, most missing in modern terms of view is the famous natural Bay of Ciotat, but a few not that small islands are missing as well, further Cassis, La Ciotat, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Bandol might be missing as well.

  • Then the drawn harbour and town that opens to west might be some village in the area of Sanary-sur-Mer/Six-Fours-les-Plages.
  • The harbour of Toulon is relatively well depicted including that protective peninsula Le Mourillon and the smaller bay on the peninsula of Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer with the exception that it all opens to the east.
  • The cape of Giens in combination with the island of Porquerolles is again relatively well recognizeable including some minor mis-placed and mis-oriented island that a sailing boat would normally pass in close distance.
  • Finally in the east the town of L'Ayguade and the former saline area of Les Salins d'Hyeres could be identified.

All above is stated under the aspect of not beeing a translation from the original card material inscriptions but from comparison with reference maps and knowledge of the true location.
