Description

Chora (Kariye) Church Mosaics Kariye Müzesi Mozaikleri

Maria Despina Palaiologina, "Mary of the Mongols", illegitimate daughter of Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos. She was married to Mongol Ilkhanate leader Abaqa Khan in the 13th century, and after his death, devoted her life to the church.

This is the only known image of Maria, from the lower right of the Byzantine Deesis mosaic in Chora Church, Istanbul (Constantinople)
