Manuel Leon Hoyos

Manuel León Hoyos, born 2 February 1989 is a Mexican chess player. He was born in Merida, Yucatan and began playing chess at the age of 8 at a local sports club. By ten, he was national champion of Mexico in his age group and by 12 he was national chapion in the under 20 catergory; he defeated all of Mexico's chess champions 20 and under at age 12.

In 2007, Hoyos was ranked number 8 in the world by FIDE for the world youth chess championships in Turkey and nearly became world champion in an epic battle that was not settled until the last round. His overall standing of 7th at the world championship confirmed he has arrived on the world stage and will continue to battle for many years to come. With an Elo of 2500 and expecing to reach 2600 by 2009, Hoyos is an important figure in the world chess scene.

Current Blitz World Champion Vassily Ivanchuk contacted Manuel to be his personal analyst during world class events that included current and former FIDE world champions.

In 2008, he plans to once again compete for a world championship and may represent his nation at the 2008 Olympics.
