Manuel Chaves González (born 7 July 1945 in Ceuta) is a spanish politician of the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE). From 1990 he is the President of the Comunidad Autónoma de Andalucía and President of the PSOE.

[edit] The minister of the Government (1986-1990)

The minister of Work and National Health Service (Seguridad Social) of Spain between 1986 and 1990, with the government of Felipe Gonzalez. (The IVth Legislature).

In 1988, he suffered a general strike (first in the current Spanish democracy) summoned between others, for the UGT and for CCOO due to his project of law consisting of the approval of a series of contractual models " in practices ".

[edit] Autonomous president (1990-)

In 1990, he obtained the presidency of the Junta de Andalucía. Of informal form, he was considered to be at the time as one of three barons of the PSOE, together with Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra and Jose Bono, also autonomous presidents.

After the defeat of his party in the general election of March 12, 2000, for which Joaquín Almunia resigns as General Secretary, he takes charge of the Political Commission. As president of the same one, he organizes 35 Congress of the PSOE, in which it would be elected a General Secretary Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.In gratefulness to the services given to the party in so delicate situation, it was proposed for the President's post of the PSOE by the own Zapatero, cargo that also he shows nowadays.
