[edit] History

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips was founded by Charles Taylor Manatt, former U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic and Thomas Phelps, a banking and finance attorney. In 1976, Mickey Kantor joined the firm and his name was added to the letterhead until his departure in 1993. Kantor served as Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton Administration. L. Lee Phillips, an entertainment lawyer, joined the firm in 1977 and became a named partner soon after.

In 2003, the growing firm merged with New York-based boutique law firm Kalkines Arky Zall & Bernstein, a health care practice to launch Manatt's New York City operations. In 2008, the firm merged with Steefel Levitt & Weiss to launch in San Francisco.
