[edit] LGBT in Malate

Why do some of you keep on removing this fact? I smell an anti-gay bias here. I've been to Malate and it is common knowledge that the area is a premier LGBT spot. Bars restaurants and various businesses reflects this. I will add a simple notation for now, and please do expand the LGBT section as needed.--Chicbicyclist 21:41, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Because Malate is so much more than that? Okay, Malate might have been a LGBT community, but it think the LGBT issues stub is unnecessary. Also, Malate is a district, why would i see addresses saying "Malate, Manila" if it's just a community? Ermita and the rest of the districts on the 5th congressional district should also been described as communities in their articles if that's the case. As for the LGBT tidbits, if you really want the LGBT section to remain, at least give a reference that says Malate is really noted for it or a picture of the businesses you've mentioned. Because you think of "gay" when people say Malate? Not mentioning the significance of the LGBT community(which like I said, is what Malate is known for, together with being a red-light district in the past) is like saying West Hollywod in California is just like any other neighboirhood/community/district just because "it is much more than that". Saying "it is much more than that" ignores the undeniable impact of a segment of the population on the area. I adressed community because it wasnt clear in the article wether or not it is in the 5th district, or is a district all by itself. Community is an umbrella term that can refer to a neighborhood, district, etc. As for references, how about I give you gay travel websites and travel sections of international newspapers referencing the more than unusual lgbt activities in Malate? I should also mention that the Official Gay Pride Parade is held in Malate every year.
Here they are:
[1] - A NY Times article describing the area as a beign the "center of gay night life"
[2] - Planet Out, one of the bigger gay travel sites in the USA. Mentions that the Gay Pride parade is held in the area in July each year, and that "All of the lodging in and around Malate is gay-friendly."
[3] - a list of gay businesses. Notice the higher than usual concentration of gay themed businesses suggesting a higher than usual LGBT activity in the area.
It's not like my edits emphasized only, and ONLY the LGBT aspects, I didnt alter a significant portion of the other non-LGBT parts of the article and since many of you insist it is "much more than that". Now if you can demonstrate that other parts of Metro Manila as a whole have the same incidences of LGBT activities as Malate, maybe I'll back down.. --Chicbicyclist 06:58, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, i didn't know that, even though i go to Malate 5 times a week to study. When people say Malate i think of it as a home to good educational insitutions, the What links here section even shows that. Besides, La Salle and St. Scho have been there long ago before even the LGBT culture started. How significant is the Malate LGBT community anyway? Enough to cloud out the other things important in Malate? Like how they're tagged as noted and the institutions and tourist spots are not? I'm not trying to get into a fight here, okay? I'm not saying adding the LGBT culture is wrong or anything, i haven't edited out those sections even once. How about de-emphasizing the LGBT section and make it neutral, since it's unfair to the other sections that deserve notation too. Or maybe aside from references, add a historical background or significance section about the LGBT community section? Well, considering that it is the center of the LGBT community in the Philippines, thats pretty darn significant. The difference between this and North Park is that it is in the pheriperies of LGBT activity, the neighboring neighborhood of Hillcrest is considered the "capital" like Malate. It's not like I did what the other editors did, mention the "gay village" in the introduction in the first paragraph. I thought mentioning it in a separate but following paragraph was fair. Anyhow, I'll settle for a compromise of moving the LGBT paragraph into its own section(actually, we might need new sections for other stuff too), but leaving the content largely intact since I believe it is NPOV right now. --Chicbicyclist 01:50, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
