The Malaysian general election of 1990 which is the 8th General Election of Malaysia was won by the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional under Mahathir Mohamad on the ideology of Ketuanan Melayu (Malay Supremacy). This is also the first General Election the new UMNO (Malay: UMNO Baru) contested.
For the opposition parties, the Semangat 46 which was formed in 1988, teamed up with Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (BERJASA) and Parti Hizbul Muslimin Malaysia (HAMIM) to form the Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah. On the other hand, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Bersatu Sabah, which withdrew from the Barisan Nasional on the candidate nomination day, teamed up as Gagasan Rakyat. However, these two opposition alliances coorperated.
