After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt. Some of its residents moved to other parts of Greece and North America. The population dramatically lost between 1981 and 2001.

Makri was battered by heavy rainfall on Monday August 6, 2007 and flooded the area and its village, its beaches were unsafe and muddy. Off the Thracian Sea by the coasts of Makri by its campground and beach, a trailer floated as far as 1 km away from the seashore. Some properties were damaged and several roads were closed.
