Makapansgat

Makapansgat is an archeological location at S 24° 9' 0" and E 29° 10' 59", within the Makapansgat Valley, North East of Potgietersrus in Limpopo province, South Africa. It is a paleontological significant site with the local limeworks containing Australopithecus-bearing deposits dating to around 3 million years BP.

Limestone Mining operations in the 1920's revealed fossilized remains. The first excavations at Makapansgat were made in the year 1947 by Raymond Dart.

Many Australopithecus fossils were discovered. Also one of the earliest examples of manuport the Makapansgat pebble was discovered at Makapansgat.
