CBS' emphasis on Tim McCarver over Jack Buck helped turn McCarver into the cliche he is today-the guy who 'when you ask him the time, will tell you how a watch works'(as Norman Chad said in 'Sports Illustrated' during the 1992 postseason).
Dick Stockton, to me, had always been a basketball announcer, no matter which sport he was broadcasting. I never felt like he really had a feel for the game, but CBS seemed to think he had some 'historical' connection to baseball, simply because he happened to be the Boston Red Sox announcer in 1975, and benefitted from NBC's then-common practice of using local announcers on World Series coverage. However, Stockton eventually settled in at CBS, and seemingly 'forgot' baseball until 1990. He never really did shake off the rust from his years away from the game.
Jim Kaat was a solid analyst, yet perhaps didn't have that 'big name' recognition or connection with audience of such commentators as Jim Palmer or Tony Kubek. Pairing him with a relatively weak play- by-play guy like Stockton gave CBS a sort of 'second-place' image among TV baseball coverage, as ESPN quickly established itself as the leader in covering the sport.
Pat O'Brien's pregame coverage, which seemed a good fit on NBA telecasts, never quite 'clicked' with baseball, and seemed to hasten his departure from TV sports.
Sean McDonough proved to be a very competent play-by-play man, although by the time he arrived, the writing was on the wall, and CBS was just counting the days til its contract expired. They even dropped Stockton in favor of Greg Gumbel, who did a credible if unspectacular job for one year (1993).
Realisitically, Buck and Kaat were probably the two best names associated with CBS' baseball coverage. But even if theyhad been paired on the telecasts, it probably wouldn't have made much difference. The glut of baseball telecasts on cable rendered network regular-season games almost meaningless...though it would take the next TV contract and 'The Baseball Network' to really drive that point home."stublueyou" <ONeill801@...>
