Majlis al Shura

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Majlis al Shura is a transliteration of the Arabic مجلس الشورى which means approximately "consultative council". Its pronunciation is approximately "majlis ash-shura".

The noun shura alone, شورى , means "consultation" and refers to (among other things) a topic in Islamic law or sharia; see Shura.

The expression Shura Council -- a partial translation of "majlis al shura", but capitalized -- is the conventional English rendering of the name of the upper house of the Egyptian parliament; see Shura Council.

Several Sunni terrorist organizations, notably al-Qaeda, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and the Mujahideen Shura Council, refer to their topmost leadership as a majlis al shura. In these cases the commoner English renderings are shura and shura council.
