History

Maitland Girls' High School was established in 1884, as one of the first four high schools in New South Wales. Seventeen pupils were enrolled, under Principal Mrs. A. Olsen.

During the principalship of Miss Jannette Grossmann (1890 - 1913) the curriculum was broadened and facilities for experimental science lessons were improved. At this stage Maitland Girls' High was a selective school with an entrance examination. Other girls attended Maitland Domestic Science School, which eventually amalgamated with the Girls' High in 1938, making the school a comprehensive Girls' School. A new school building on the site of the former Cumberland Hall was occupied in 1963, the move instigated after the 1955 Maitland Flood, and the previous school building became a historical museum known as Grossmann House. In the early 1980s a decision was made to ease pressure of Maitland Boys' and Girls' High Schools by establishing a third high school at Rutherford, in the western suburbs of Maitland. In 1989, Maitland Girls' High converted to co-education. MGHS became Maitland High School, but at the start of 1989 the Minister for Education decided to change the name to Maitland Grossmann High School in honour of the past principal, Mrs. Jannette Grossmann.

120th anniversary

MGHS celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2004. It has strong ties with Sydney Girls High School, with which it shares the motto Labor Omnia Vincit ("Work Conquers All"). MGHS is well known for its outstanding cultural outreach, including music programs and the Adopt-A-Resident program in which students volunteer their time to visit elderly people in nearby nursing homes.

Cross country

The school currently holds the cross country regional combined high schools trophy.
