Maiales

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During World War II, the Maiale (seapig) mini-sub was used by Italy to transport frogmen into a harbor or anchorage occupied by enemy ships. When close to an intended target, the frogmen would exit their ship, place a mine on the enemy's hull, set a timer, and then return to their craft. This technique was used effectively against British ships at Gibraltar and Alexandria.
