[edit] Can't see it

I've never been able to see these types of 3-D shapes, despite a lot of attempts. Isn't there a certain percentage of the population that can't? 205.217.105.2

From the other article: It is estimated that some 2% of normally sighted people cannot see the illusion in autostereograms. 205.217.105.2 17:12, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've never been able to see the evil things. I think you're all making this up.

Squint your eyes more and cross them too.

Here's the real way to see Magic Eyes. Practice, first. Hold your index finger up right between your eyes and try and see double. Can you see two index fingers? Great, you can do Magic Eyes.

Look at any Magic Eye image -- there is a repeating left-to-right pattern. The trick is to make your eyes see double vision that the repeating pattern overlaps. Do this, and you see the image. Get the image to overlap two or three or four times and it can get really interesting. You can do this on any pattern you see. Try staring at wallpaper sometime and get the images to overlap and there will be some illusion of 3d. Kevin143 07:49, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The warning

What's the source of the comment that looking at these things on a CRT may be harmful? I don't remember seeing that elsewhere, and since I'd just looked at the picture on this very page - on a CRT! - I was a little taken aback... Loganberry (Talk) 5 July 2005 23:38 (UTC)

[edit] Can't see the parallel-viewing images (all magic eye images)

When I try to see the magic-eye images, they all seem like they are "carved" and not "popping out" as they are intended to be. I've tried the techniques described on the links at the end of the wiki but no dice. As there's no documentation describing people only being able to see cross-eyed images, this must be because of lack of practice...

Well, the "carved" look you're talking about is the inverted version you get when you cross your eyes (converge them). You're supposed to diverge your eyes, in which case it should work correctly. I am also able to see the carved image crossing my eyes which I think you're doing. My problem is that I can't diverge my eyes to the distance and still focus on the nearby page. It seems then I can't control my lenses and my eye convergence independently. I can't find anyone discussing this and it certainly isn't mentioned in this article. I think this needs an eye expert's input.

[edit] Information under wrong title

It appears that much of the content of this article is (or refers to) the result of people [conf]using Magic Eye(tm) as a synonym for autostereogram (← nice, big article). Discuss. Frencheigh 10:11, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

The use of "Magic Eye" in http://www.vision3d.com/VTdocs.html could be taken to mean either, I guess... i dunno, but something that goes into a little more detail about what Magic Eye has done regarding this would be nice. The image Image:041111_magic_eye_1g_a.png doesn't look much like Magic Eye's stuff, it was apparently created by the user. It's hard to believe that the "Magical Eye" maze is affiliated with them, nor http://www.faust.fr.bw.schule.de/mhb/sterenmag.htm. The yahoo group is general, and isn't okay per WP:EL anyhow. So I've removed stuff. (diff) Frencheigh 07:53, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Guide to seeing it

OK, here's my way of seeing them. Don't cross your eyes. Hell, don't even concentrate on the image to start with. Instead, the trick is to look past/through/behind the image.

Here is an exercise to demonstrate what you should be trying to do. If you hold up your finger about 6 inches from your nose and look at a wall behind it, you will notice can see two copied of your finger. Now, concentrate on the fingers, don't look at them, but make your brain concentrate on the fingers. ok, now put your other finger up at the same distance but 6 inches off to the side of it, keep looking at the wall behind it, and move your second finger closer to the first one you put up until they "cross over" and form one solid finger. There will be 1 "transparent" finger on each side of it - three fingers in total.

This is what you are trying to do with the repeating images of the Magic Eye, make two of the repeating images cross over ,the opposite way that you would if you were to "cross" your eyes, and become one solid image. When you cross your eyes your are basically focusing on something closer to your nose than the image you are looking at, as I have said above, the trick with these images is to look past/through behind them. When you notice something - anything - strange about the image when you look past it, concentrate on that anomaly, it will take your brain up to 20 seconds to adjust and view/comprehend the image. I hope this helps, let me know on my talk page if I helped you see the images.
