Magnoliidae

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magnoliidae is a botanical name of a subclass. The circumscription of the subclass will vary with the taxonomic system being used (there are many such systems). The only requirement is that it must include the family Magnoliaceae (Art 16 of the ICBN).

[edit] Cronquist system

The Cronquist system used this name for one of six subclasses (within class Magnoliopsida = dicotyledons). In the original version of this system the circumscription was (1981):

In APG II, many of the plants involved are placed in the magnoliids.

[edit] Dahlgren and Thorne system

In the Dahlgren and the Thorne systems the name Magnoliidae is used for the dicotyledons. This is also the case in some of the systems derived from the Cronquist system.

[edit] APG system

The APG and APG II systems do not use formal botanical names above the rank of order. That is, these systems do not use names such as Magnoliidae. The APG magnoliids are effectively a more exactly circumscripted Cronquist Magnoliidae however.
