[edit] Plot
The play is a full-length production starring Perry as his fully liberated and barely-in-control alter ego, Mabel "Madea" Simmons.
Madea Goes to Jail begins at her home. Madea's niece by marriage, Vanessa (Chantell Christopher), is busy working on her laptop for her degree, when Madea's neighbor, Ella Kincaid (Cassi Davis), enters. Meanwhile, Vanessa's parole officer husband (and Madea's nephew), Sonny (Christian Keyes) continues to ask for certain things, such as his work shirt and breakfast. Ella, noticing Vanessa's rudeness and frustration, reminds her that her husband is doing his best for their family and she should go easy on him. Soon, Sonny's boss, Nate arrives, offering Sonny a ride to work. Upset with all of the commotion, Vanessa storms off to her room to study alone. Sonny goes to comfort her, and he gives her hopes of a romantic evening together. But once the two policemen leave, Ella gets a call from Madea, who tells Ella that she is in jail. Sonny gets Madea out of jail, but before we meet Katie (mother of Toni) and "Chico", jailmates of Madea. While Sonny is at work, Sonny's Boss is at his home with Vanessa and the baby. Interrupting their affair, Nate hears water running causing him and Vanessa to rush to the bathroom to see the baby scalded by hot water. The baby later requires a blood transfusion, to which Wanda (Cheryl Pepsii Riley), a head prosecutor for "Children & Family Services" arrives stating that the baby is stable but Sonny's blood is not a match; Vanessa has been having multiple affairs and Sonny is not the father.
