[edit] Rename proposal

I think Macintosh Toolbox should be renamed to Toolbox (API), for consistency with Carbon (API) and Cocoa (API). votes? — boredzo () 08:07, 2005-07-16 (UTC)

FTR: if no-one votes, I'll do the move on 2005-07-23. if anyone does vote, I'll do it five days after the last vote. — boredzo () 14:20, 2005-07-18 (UTC)

Looks like the move was never done, but I'd have to say I don't think it's necessary. The Toolbox has an API, but it is not itself an API. The reason for the clarification on the other articles is because "cocoa" and "carbon" both have more common generic meanings. This article has a very specific title, and if anyone in the future writes an article on "toolboxes" in general, the redirect can be removed. MFNickster 18:18, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Just FYI it is possible to boot Old World Macs into an alternate OS without first booting MacOS/toolbox. I have Gentoo PPC Linux installed and booting directly on a Power Mac 7300 with no sign of MacOS other than toolbox being in the ROM. I did however have to patch the buggy OF on this machine. [edit] odd assertions

This article makes strong assertions by saying that

  • the Toolbox is specifically in ROM
  • high-level resources and low-level OS routines are included in the Toolbox
  • no clear distinction exists between Toolbox and non-Toolbox

I'd like to see some source showing how and when the original scope the toolbox (APIs with A-traps lacking modifier bits) changed. I don't think it ever did. Potatoswatter (talk) 08:16, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
