[edit] Etymology
The surname, MacAuley, can be derived from two different names.
- Scottish origin (from Dunbartonshire; see Clan MacAulay), and Irish origin (from County Westmeath).[2] The name is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Amhalghaidh, a personal name of uncertain origin.[2]
- Scottish origin (from the Hebrides; see MacAulays of Lewis), and Irish origin (from County Fermanagh).[2] The name is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Amhlaoibh or Mac Amhlaidh, meaning "son of Olaf".[2] These Gaelic names derive from the Old Norse personal names Áleifr and Óláfr.[2]
