[edit] Summary

Description

Map of an early 20th-century Antarctic trip superimposed on a much later image. On May 8, 1916, Aeneas Mackintosh and Victor Hayward, members of the Ross Sea party, set out from Hut Point (A), intending to walk across the ice to Cape Evans (B). They disappeared in the area indicated as C, and no trace of them was ever found. In this image, the Erebus ice tongue is shown extending from the Erebus glacier on Ross Island, Antarctica, into frozen McMurdo Sound.
