I'm from the village of Tobermore in South Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Like all people from the island of Ireland, i've a mongrel mixture of genes which includes the following; indigenous Irish, Gaelic, Norman, Anglo-Saxon, and Cruithne.

Proud descendant (though not by my own surname) of the O'Laithbheartaigh (Laverty) sept, former Lords of Ailech and Kings of Tyrone before we got ousted by those oul O'Neill's.

I'm very interested in my local history and the history of Ireland and the British Isles as a whole. I believe that there is a lot of misconceptions in Irish history, not helped by ignorance from nationalist and unionist historians as well as the misconceptions of some 19th century historians who grouped many things in ancient Britain under the umbrella term of Celtic even when we now know that they are not.

I'm glad to see the creation of the An Comhortas Aontachtóirí Éireannach (Irish Unionist Alliance) party as i think its long overdue the minority British population in the Republic of Ireland had a voice that represented them - i'm also glad they've stepped beyond the political-cultural battlefield and embraced both sides of the shared heritage we all have - never thought i'd see a unionist party using Irish!

[edit] Some Misconceptions in Irish History

I'll add more to this over time.

[edit] Gaelic are the true native Irish

The Gaelic are fact not the native indigenous people of Ireland as i've heard many nationalists who boast of their Gaelicness say. Even their own myths in the Book of Invasions makes mention of other people before them, as does historical fact. Rather they where the latest set of invaders and settlers of the islands until the Vikings and then Anglo-Normans invaded and settled.

[edit] The Battle of the Boyne was a sectarian battle between the Protestants and Roman Catholics of Ireland

The Battle of the Boyne was a battle which had important consequences for Europe never mind Irish history. James 2nd, disposed Roman Catholic king of Great Britain and Ireland, was an ally of France, a country which was expanding its territory throughout Europe so much so that the Papacy became concerned as did other countries.

A European coalition consisting amongst others of Protestant Denmark, Netherlands and Germany along with Roman Catholic Spain, Austria, with the backing of the Papacy, was formed to curb the French. Protestant Prince William of Orange 3rd was the leader of this coalition.

James 2nd was disposed by the English Parliament in favour of his nephew Prince William of Orange 3rd, who was also married to his Protestant daughter Mary. He sought to reinstate himself with Roman Catholic Irish and French support.

France also sought to have James 2nd reinstated as king as he would allow them to use Great Britain as a new base from which they could attack northern Europe.

So at the Battle of the Boyne a multi-European force of Danes, Dutch, Protestant Irish and others led by King William of Orange 3rd against the Irish-French forces of King James 2nd.

Was it sectarian? In the general makeup of the forces involved maybe but there was far more to it than religion. It was the litnus test for the Grand Alliance against the alliance of France and James 2nd, a battle that may possibly have changed European history.
