M-211 is a short state trunkline route in the U.S. state of Michigan that connects the community of Onaway with Onaway State Park.[3] Except for the redesignation in 1934, the only major changes to the highway were in 1959 when it was fully paved.[1]
[edit] Route description
M-211 is a rural two-lane highway. It starts at M-68 in Onaway and runs north out of town and through woods to the gate of Onaway State Park, located on the shore of Black Lake. All of M-211 is undivided and none of it is listed on the National Highway System.
[edit] History
From its inception to 1934, current M-211 was numbered as M-95. At the time, the current M-95 in the Upper Peninsula was numbered as M-45 and paralleled the then newly designated US 45. Old M-45 received a new designation to minimize any confusion between US 45 and a M-45 in the UP. The Old M-95 received the current designation as M-211 to free up the M-95 designation.[1][2] The M-45 designation was later reused in the Grand Rapids area in 1964.[4]
