[edit] Route description
M-183 lies on the Garden Peninsula in Delta County. Running along the east shore of Big Bay de Noc, M-183 is a rural two-lane road. The designation ends at the gate to Fayette State Park, an historical iron smelting town site from the 1800s. Now a ghost town, the Jackson Iron Company operations lasted here from 1867-1891. Past the entrance to the park, the roadway continues under local jurisdiction as Delta County Road 483.
[edit] History
[edit] Previous routing
Between 1932-10-29 and 1960-07-06, the M-183 designation was used on another highway in the Lower Peninsula serving as an access road to the "Dodge Bros. #1 State Park" (part of today's Island Lake State Recreation Area). It looped between US 16 and US 23 near Brighton. Briggs Lake Drive was turned back to local control, and a portion inside the park was converted into a park access road.[1]
[edit] Current routing
The highway was commissioned in 1984 as a transfer of the northern portion of Delta CR 483. The number was chosen to reflect the CR 483 designation it once bore.
