Lynn Rippelmeyer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lynn Rippelmeyer is the first female to Captain to a Boeing 747 on a transatlantic voyage. On July 9, 1984 she piloted a People Express Boeing 747 on flight from Newark Liberty International Airport/EWR to London Gatwick Airport/LGW. (On that day Captain Beverly Burns, shared the honor of 'first female 747 pilot' with Lynn when she captained a trans-Continental flight from Newark Liberty Airport/EWR to Los Angeles International Airport/LAX on another People Express 747. The two pilots wanted to share the honor and agreed to make their milestone flights on the same day.) On July 7, 1980, Lynn was also the first female to fly as a First officer (co-pilot) on the Boeing 747 for Seaboard World Airlines.

Prior to getting hired by People Express, she flew for Air Illinois. While a DHC-6 Twin Otter as a first officer, she was part of another milestone: the first all female crew on a scheduled US airline, alongside Captain Emily Jones, on Dec 30th 1978. [1]

Before changing careers to airline pilot, Lynn was a Trans World Airlines flight attendant. [2] After People Express folded, Lynn went on to fly for Continental Airlines.
