The Port of Kaohsiung is the largest harbor of Taiwan, handling approximately 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) worth of cargo in 2007^[1]. The port is officially administrated by Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau, a division under the Ministry of Transportation of Taiwan's central government.

The Port was originally a lagoon. At the time of 16th century, a fishing village was already established on northern part of the lagoon.
