Lusher Charter School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lusher Charter School is a charter school located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The school has two sites: the original Willow Street campus, housing the elementary school (K-5), and the Fortier campus on Freret St., where the middle and high schools (6-12) have been located since August 2006.

In 2008, Lusher's first senior class of thirty-five students was offered over two million dollars in college scholarships and included three national merit winners and a semifinalist for a Presidential Scholarship in the Arts. The school is widely known for its arts program at both sites. It became a charter school in January 2005. The middle and high schools moved into the historic Alcee Fortier High School building after that school's closing in 2005, due to Hurricane Katrina. The Fortier site is 4 stories with 3 wings including the main wing (facing Freret Street), the middle school wing (entrance on Joseph Street) and the high school and arts wing (entrance on Nashville). Lusher school rules are called Project Pride. Project Pride consists of "be kind, be responsible, respect people and property, and do your best work". The principal/CEO is Kathy Riedlinger. The Elementary School principal is Sheila Nelson, the Middle School principal is Brenda Bourne, and the High School principal is Wiley Ates.
