Luis de Onís

Luis de Onís Gonzalez Vara (17621827) was a Spanish diplomat. Born in Cantalapiedra, Salamanca and educated at the University of Salamanca, he served as the Spanish foreign minister to the United States from 1809 to 1819. He is remembered for negotiating the Adams-Onís Treaty with United States Secretary of State John Quincy Adams in 1819.
