[edit] Goals at Wikipedia

I am still new here, so I do not yet know how best to contribute. Here are some things I would like to do to get my feet wet.

[edit] Expand the Zork-related articles

I enjoy writing, and someday I would like to say I wrote a great many articles here. I understand Zork is "just a game," but I want to practice writing before I get into the more serious stuff. Generally, I am not someone described as "bold," and changing this will take time and effort.

[edit] Make thousands of minor edits

The sad reality is this: some people refuse to trust Wikipedia. Worse, they insist on winning over converts, and will use any justification, however trivial, to accomplish it. If the only negative thing they can say about an article is that a word is misspelled, or the author has used "loose" instead of "lose," they will do so, and will insist that the error destroys the whole article's credibility and--by extension--all of Wikipedia's.

The fact that this is untrue is irrelevant. Every foothold they gain, they use to put Wikipedians on the defensive. They change the topic of discussion from whether Wikipedia's content is high-quality into whether the quality of grammar or spelling reflects on the quality of content.

Every chance I get, I clean up "obvious" errors, because I want people to be forced to discuss Wikipedia's content, not its presentation.

[edit] Write new articles

Technically, I suppose I have already accomplished this with the Zork: Nemesis article, but currently, that article is a stub, and not a really good one, in my opinion (I hope to fix that, though). Red links are my ultimate target. I want to close apparent gaps in content with high-quality articles, or at least create meaningful stubs.

[edit] Maintain enthusiasm

The danger here for me is to dive into Wikipedia, make lots of changes, and then burn out and lose interest. I want to try and avoid that. I prefer to think that this is the start of a long-term project for me, but the lofty nature of the goals I just set for myself above is dangerous, and ultimately daunting.

If I proceed "slow and steady," though, I think I can keep myself interested for a long time to come.
