I reverted your changes to crime because there is no indication as to how it was correcting something incorrect. I don't think criminal law can be accurately characterized as "protecting the public" for many of them, for example, smoking marijuana, and numerous other ones that exist or have existed. Also, Wikipedia is international, and American spelling doesn't necessarily rule the day except in explicitly American topics. The general principle is to repect the work that has already been done on an article and to make changes towards improving them, not based on preferences or just change for the sake of change. If you still feel the article needs to reflect the changes you made, please take it up on the talk page. In the meantime, welcome to Wikipedia and happy editing!
