Lord Clarence Paget

Lord Clarence Edward Paget KCB (17 June 1811 – 22 March 1895) was a British admiral, politician and sculptor.
Paget, was a younger son of the 1st Marquess of Anglesey. Like many younger sons of nobility he entered the Royal Navy, and was a midshipman on the battleship HMS Asia at the Battle of Navarino in 1827. He attempted to enter Parliament as a Liberal for Southampton in 1837, but was returned as a member for Sandwich in 1847, retaining the seat until July of 1852. He served as secretary to the Master-General of the Ordnance from 1846 to 1853. In 1852 he married Martha Stuart, the youngest daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Waller Otway, Bt. He commanded HMS Princess Royal in the expedition to the Baltic, 1854. Again MP for Southampton from March 1857; Secretary to the Admiralty, June 1859; but accepted the Chiltern Hundreds (resigned) in March of 1866. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral of the Red in 1863 and was Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean from 1866 to 1869. Lord Clarence Paget died in 1895 at the age of 83.
