[edit] Postal arrangements

The postcode district is part of the LONDON post town.[1] There are no dependent localities used in the postcode district.[1] The numbered district was created in 1917. Before then it had been included in the SE postal district. All sectors (0-9) are in use in this postcode district.[1] There has been no significant recoding of the district from 1990 to 2007.[2] There are Post Office branches in the district at Blackfriars Road, Borough Road, Dockhead, Great Dover Street, London Bridge, Old Kent Road and Westminster Bridge Road.[3]

[edit] Demography

The postcode district has a population of 55,281 in 25,640 residential properties and the greatest number (88.6%) of the properties are flats.[4] The population density is very high, with 103.3 people per square kilometre. The median age of residents is 30.[4]

[edit] Coverage

Most of the district is within the London Borough of Southwark, but a small part to the west is in the London Borough of Lambeth. It includes the riverside Southbank Centre and stretches east to cover Shad Thames and part of Bermondsey. It includes all of the area around the southern approach to London Bridge, known as the Borough. It has a southern boundary at New Kent Road and includes the area to the north of Elephant and Castle. In the west the district forms a long, thin riverside protrusion covering the Albert Embankment and ending at Vauxhall Bridge.[5]
