Although today's 97 commenced operation on 19 November 1988 as a daily service between Chingford Station and Leyton (Downsell Road) via Chingford Mount, Walthamstow, Walthamstow Central Station, Bakers Arms and Leyton High Road. It is actually descended from a daily route 97 that commenced operation on 31 January 1981 along with a Monday to Saturday supplementary service 97A.

The route number 97 had been used prior to its current use.
- Between 1959 - 1968 route 97 operated between Brentford and Ruislip station.
- Between 1971 - 1978 route 97 operated between Northumberland Park station and Liverpool Street station.
