[edit] History

Route 224 was introduced on 24 February 1990 to replace the withdrawn section of route 226 between Wembley and Park Royal, the 224 then runs parallel the 226 between Park Royal and Harlesden Jubilee Clock, along the Old Oak Lane and terminates at Willesden Junction.

The 224 has always been operated by Centrewest (now First London) at their Alperton garage; initially using Metrobuses, the route was converted to single-deck operation in 1991 using midibuses.

In 2001, the 224, 223, 226, PR1 and PR2 were upgraded to new low-floor Dennis Dart/Marshall Capitals, the 224 & 226 with long version (DMLs), and 223, PR1 and PR2 with short version (DMs).

When First's new Willesden Junction garage was opened in 2003 to accommodate the 18's new bendy buses, the 187, 226, PR1 and PR2 took 224's DMLs, so the 224 and 487 gained shorter DMs cascaded from Westborne Park (from the conversion of the 28, 31 and 328 to double deck).
