[edit] Caption disputed
Warning:
The above description is a POV of another user-the photo doesn't speak anything about liberation, polish population etc. The war was ended in May 1945.As it isn't dated it could have been past that date.
The caption written by Irpen is disputed for the following reasons:
- It is different from the original caption and implies different things.
- The original caption suggests imply that the pic depicts Soviet SP artillery entering Łódź. Irpen implies, without citing his sources, that the picture shows Soviet tanks liberating Łódź (thus implying certain date), and that the people shown are civilians. While the latter is probable, it is by no means certain (as evidenced by the picture of Warsaw "civilians" wearing Soviet uniforms
- The caption invented by Irpen is highly POV as it suggests that the Soviet seizure of Poland was in fact liberation. Such a wording was disputed in a number of places and it was agreed to be careful with "liberations" as long as we don't want the Germans to liberate Kiev in 1941 or Poles to liberate Moscow during the Times of Trouble.
- Besides, Irpen suggests that the tanks have just entered the town and not, for instance, leave for the USSR. This is by no means certain, as the original caption does not state that, nor does any of the captions for similar photos available over the web.

- All we know about this picture is that it is ISU-122. All the rest are speculations. --Lysytalk 12:53, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
All thing considered, I feel some of us are taking this issue too far. Sure, caption about just 'liberating' is misleading, but I've always found that 'liberating from Nazi occupation' is a true statement. Wording of the caption with entering is even better, and I see no harm in noting that the civilians welcomed the Red Army than: although I'd like to see some neutral sources for that, I'd not be suprised if many people would welcome ANYBODY who threw the Germans away, and I am sure many believed that the gov-in-exile and Western Allies would ensure the Red Army did not overstayed their welcome...-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 14:37, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- "Liberation from the Nazi occupation" is as POVed as any version here. It's the word "liberation" that is completely out of the place here. How can one liberate anyone from anything without actually setting anyone free? Replacing the Nazi occupation would be a better term, but liberation?
- But of course this is not the main problem here. The problem is that the fictional caption created by Irpen should be marked as such. //Halibutt 18:30, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- Halibutt, if you have a problem with the caption, try and fix it instead of inserting tags and reverting. -- Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 18:49, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WP:LAME
I agree with Ghirla, that this is really a case for WP:LAME. Better do something more productive, all of us. There are many more interesting things to disagree about ;-) --Lysytalk 21:44, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
