This Time Around: Live in Tokyo is a live album from the Mark IV edition of Deep Purple. After the band's demise in 1976, a live album called Last Concert in Japan was released in 1977. It was compiled from shows the band did in Tokyo in December 1975. It was heavily edited, and, coming on the heels of their previous Japanese-recorded album Made in Japan, it failed to deliver, and was never released in the US. In 2001 the complete show was released as This Time Around.
Although the audience was largely unaware of it at the time of the show, new member Tommy Bolin had a severe drug addiction, that ultimately would prove to be fatal less than a year later. Bolin is said to have suffered near total loss of sensitivity on his left arm due to a recently injected heroin dose before the first concerts of the japanese tour. After undergoing medical treatment for several days, Bolin had recovered most of his left arm sensitivity by the time of the taping of this show. However, these events are still mentioned as the explanation for what many fans consider to be some of his weakest playing ever. The opinion of fans about this recording remains nevertheless divided to this day: some see it as a low point for the band in general (and Bolin specifically), whilst others see it as a testament to the talent of the rest of the band (Jon Lord deserving special praise as he had to cover for the below-par Bolin), showing their ability to rise to the occasion.
