Livestation is a platform for distributing live television and radio broadcasts over a peer-to-peer data network.[1] It is being developed by Skinkers Ltd. based on peer-to-peer technology acquired from Microsoft Research.[2]

[edit] Overview

Livestation uses a Silverlight[2] front-end to playback broadcast streams, encoded in VC-1 format, received over a peer-to-peer overlay network.[2] Playback controls are overlaid on top of the video stream. Unlike services such as Joost which offer video on demand channels, Livestation streams live broadcasts.[3] Livestation splits a video stream into multiple stripes, each of which are shared independently among peers.[2] Current live TV news channels include, Al Jazeera English, BBC World News, Russia Today, Bloomberg Television, EuroNews in English, Spanish, French and Italian, France 24 in French and English and I-Télé. With more live, global news channels expected to be added. Livestation also streams BBC World Service Radio. Negotiations are going on with other broadcasters to make other channels available.[1]

The software is currently available in an open beta for Windows, with a Mac version being made available soon. The system can also be ported to Windows Mobile once a port of Silverlight is made available on that platform.[3]
