Liu Fang

This is a Chinese name; the family name is 刘 (Liu).

Liu Fang (traditional Chinese: 劉芳; simplified Chinese: 刘芳) (born 1974) is a pipa player. Born in Kunming in the Chinese province of Yunnan, she began playing the pipa at the age of 6. Her first solo public performance was at the age of 9. In 1985, at age 11, she played for Queen Elizabeth II. She graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where she also studied the guzheng.[1] In 1996 she immigrated to Canada and currently lives in Montreal.[2]

Since her move to Canada she has produced several CDs and played at the 60th anniversary of UNESCO in Paris on November 16, 2005. She has also been honored by the government of Canada.[3] She has performed the works of many contemporary composers, including Chen Yi, Tan Dun, David Loeb, and R. Murray Shaefer, and has performed frequently with the violinist Malcolm Goldstein.
