Frets on Fire is a music video game and a clone of the Guitar Hero video game series, in which players use the keyboard to play along with scrolling on-screen musical notes to complete a song. Frets on Fire was the winner of the Assembly demo party 2006 game development competition.[1]

[edit] Gameplay
Being a clone of the Guitar Hero games, the gameplay of Frets on Fire is the same - the player emulates playing the guitar section of a song. The remarkable difference between the games is that Frets on Fire is meant to be played on the keyboard by default. The keyboard is also meant to be picked up like a guitar in order to play, with one hand pressing the fret buttons and another pressing the pick buttons. There is support for joysticks however, meaning that the Guitar Hero controllers can be used as well.[2] Colored markers appear on the screen, synchronized with the song, and are played by holding the "fret buttons" of the correct color (F1 through F5) and pressing one of the "pick buttons" (Enter or Shift) at the correct moment. Every ten correct hits increase the point multiplier (which multiplies the points for every hit) up to by four times), which is reset in case of a miss.
Since version 1.2.438, the game features "hammer-on and pull-off" (commonly abbreviated to "HOPO") notes. A HOPO note allows you to only press its fret button to play it if the previous note was played correctly. Bugs were found in the new gameplay element, and version 1.2.451 fixed them, along with adding an option to disable HOPO notes.[3]
[edit] Features
- A tutorial
- A built-in song editor
- Three default songs by Tommi Inkilä, along with the ability to export songs from Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II and to download songs made by others
- "World Charts", an online high score list
- Compatibility with joysticks and guitar controllers[2]
[edit] Anti-virus warnings
Some anti-virus programs have been known to report false positives with Frets on Fire. This is because the game is compiled from Python source to an executable file using py2exe, which was also used to make the Backdoor.Rajump keylogger. A mistaken virus description crafted from the keylogger caused anti-virus programs to misidentify the game as a virus.[citation needed]
