Talk:List of warships by nickname
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Citations
I have started adding citations to this list. Preferences have been given to 'official' sites, especially defence sites of the nations involved ( ~.mil, ~.gc.ca, ~.mod.uk, etc). Also given weight are mentions in news articles or releases by news orgs, the more widely known the better (for example, the statement that the "USS Pierce" was called the "Hawkeye" would carry more weight if it appeared in the NY Times or on PBS than if it appeared in say the Crabapple Cove Coupon Collector -- especially if references were few and far between). I may end up deleting some of the nicknames, as they seem to be unverifiable and based on a single anecdote. Basically, I'm trying to de-cruft this list, if possible. /* Citations */ On the warship nicknames page, add to "S" list "Shitty Dick", WWII nickname for USS South Dakota (BB-57)which was commonly applied not by her ship's company, but by everyone else; and correct "Swayback Maru", actual nickname of USS Salt Lake City (CA-25), apropos considering her superstructure arrangement. The Swan of the East: SMS Emden The Lonely Queen of the North: Tirpitz The Ugly Sisters: Scharnhorst and Gneisenau (Why ugly???) Zachrias: SMS Zähringen The Fat Karl: SMS Karl der Große
