Major Change suggestion Jeepday 03:08, 16 November 2006 (UTC) As I was looking into making a category as has been suggested here, I found that it already has been made.. I suggest -

  • ensure that every active page linked to from this page is in an occupattions category
  • delete the page link when it has been categoried
  • on completion redirect this page to the

I disagree with the opening sentence on this page. Most of these occupations aren't professions, really! I don't see, for example, any way of classifying an alewife or archer as professionals: in earlier, snobbier days only certain pursuits (law, medicine, the church, the military, architecture, etc.) were called "professions," and archery and alewifery were certainly not among them. (For that matter, neither was venture capital.)

In our more open-minded era, however, although we aren't so stingy in our use of the word professional, there are (alas) no more alewives or archers among us. In short, has there ever been an era to call an alewife a professional? Doops 23:40, 18 May 2004 (UTC)

Would a more appropriate title for this article be "List of occupations" or something else that is more appropriate? Many entries cannot be classified as professions (especially beggar and king) and many listed are titles or positions within a profession (such as Archbishop)?

Update. In hindsight I do not believe the new article title is actually the most appropriate. Although it is an improvement over professions, there is still the nature of the inclusion of entries such as Archbishop. The list can better be described as "list of professions, occupations and job-titles/positions" which is far too cumbersome. Perhaps I should have waited a little longer before moving it. [edit] Merge proposal

I have not particular view, but would suggest that this list be retained and Lists of career and job titles be converted to a redirect. This is much the better article, including as it does many obsolete, but historically important trades. It would be better still if it became a category. Peterkingiron 22:04, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I also think this is the more complete list and a the Lists of career and job titles should redirect here, a Category would be good also Jeepday 02:36, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Jeepday 15:57, 11 November 2006 (UTC) I completed the merge and redirect, and would suggest the following

  • Use Peterkingiron's idea and create a category, maybe "Careers and Occupations"
  • Use the web site http://www.bls.gov/ as a significant reference for everything in this category and/or page
  • Make a plan to format and organize this page it so it does not become unruly as it grows.
