[edit] Missing ship vs. Missing wreck

It would be nice to mark out "missing wrecks" among the list of "missing ships". When the list has grown to considerable size it would be possible to split the list into two articles. --Kvasir (talk) 08:08, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Citation

In light of user:Otolemur crassicaudatus over zealous citation tagging -- sometimes tagging BOTH the section and the only entry in the section -- I have brought the issue to the following discussion: Wikipedia_talk:When_to_cite#Citation_in_lists. Seems like the concensus is that entries collected from Category:Disappeared ships and others (I also found other similar categories such as Category:Missing submarines of WWII and Category:Missing U-boats) implies that the ship is missing and therefore does not require repeat citation. I have also checked all the articles in the categories to confirm they are in fact missing. I have found some ships in those categories were actually ghost ships. Any additional entries and infomation not in those categories and the ship article itself will need citation. --Kvasir (talk) 20:34, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Any idea on how to shorten the citation section? In light of citation police out here this section will be as long as the article itself, since 95% of all entry has a corresponding citation. --Kvasir (talk) 06:01, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
It is not a fact if there are sources in other articles or not. The fact is that sources should be provided in this article. It is very much necessary to provide source for each and every fact to promote this article to Featured List status. Without citation, the list cannot be promoted to Featured List status. This list is only a few days old, and continually growing. It's nowhere near Featured List anytime soon nor is it trying to seek the status since this list will never been complete (we can never account for all ships that have ever gone missing). --Kvasir (talk) 17:37, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Australia

A great source for Australian shipwrecks can be found at http://oceans1.customer.netspace.net.au/easw.html . I have just finished adding entries from Tasmania. I basically search the word "never" as in "never heard from" or "never seen again" and add the entries. I have skipped "unidentified" ships that the names have not been reported or they were not registered. I don't think they are important anyway. Next would be wikify all the entries.

Feel free to contribute by adding the rest of the region. I'm not sure if it's meaningful to divide Australia into states, but it looks like there are going to be a lot of entries for Australia. --Kvasir (talk) 00:14, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Australia to-do list: NSW, QLD, S AUS, VIC, W AUS, Australia Run, General, International, New zealand, South pacific. --Kvasir (talk) 05:04, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tables

I have now started to incorporate sortable collapsible tables which would improve the look of the article. Please use existing tables as template for new entries and continue using the same format for entries that haven't been incorporated yet. --Kvasir (talk) 22:41, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Nova Scotia

Nice database available here to add new entries: http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mma/wrecks/wrecks/Results.asp?Search=unknown&fieldSelect=locWreck&Start=1 --Kvasir (talk) 22:53, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

147(!) records for ships that were registered in NS. Need to cut this some how.

Vessel Name Date of Wreck Event Location of Wreck

[edit] Marion

This entry was in the List of shipwrecks, however I wasn't able to find a source saying that it's a real event. All I found was that it seems to be a Newfoundlander folk song "Loss of the Marion". Anyone know if an actual ship Marion disappeared? --Kvasir (talk) 19:45, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sources

This list was initially compiled from Category:Disappeared ships, Category:Missing submarines of WWII and Category:Missing U-boats with others to be added from the lists

I'm trying to add all ships labelled as "missing" or "never heard of" to this article. This would not include known wrecks that are not relocated again, which are harder to identify and verify. Currently this list hopes to include both. Please add more examples to this list if there are any uncatergorised article out there somewhere. --Kvasir (talk) 06:23, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

There may be more entries in List of shipwrecks that should be in this one. That list seems to combine both the definition of wreck as a physical object and wreck as an event. This will take more time to go through and pick out those that are missing or have no definite location (no exact coordinates available). --Kvasir (talk) 20:45, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] References

Can someone that's familiar with the format please clean up the reference link to wikipedia standard? Perhaps we can categorise them? --Kvasir (talk) 16:38, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Source needed

The following entries require source. They were mostly moved from List of shipwrecks. --Kvasir (talk) 19:45, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Island Queen

I just removed "Island Queen" from List of people who have disappeared [1]. Maybe it belongs here. 58.8.5.244 (talk) 16:44, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

"On 6 August 1944, a ship named the Island Queen vanished completely from Grenada. A second ship, the Providence Mark, which made the same journey on the same night arrived safely with no hint of trouble. Not a trace of the Island Queen or the people on board was ever found."
Thankyou. I'll add it once a reference is found. --Kvasir (talk) 19:49, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
