[edit] Mottos vs. slogans

>Maryland: (none)

How does the state motto compare to having a slogan ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.8.184.25 (talk) 00:29, December 15, 2003

> Maryland: 1 slogan —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.69.61.87 (talk) 16:36, October 22, 2006
Mottos are officially adopted by states through legislation, often upon the state being granted statehood, and usually don't change (though Oregon's did change recently), while slogans are used for tourism advertising by official state tourism offices and change more often. [edit] New Hampshire

New Hampshire: "Make up for lost time."

According to the official state web page, this is not part of the state motto. Whoever wrote this, please submit your references.

It has been clarified that this article is for *slogans* not *mottos*. I'm removing "Live Free or Die" as that is listed under mottos already. According to www.visitnh.gov, the slogan is "You're Going to Love it Here." I can't find a source that the slogan was ever "Make up for lost time", but if someone can find a source, please add it as a former slogan. Here is a blog musing on the difference between mottos and slogans, focusing on New Hampshire. Katr67 23:16, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Citing sources for additions to Oregon

"Pacific Wonderland" [1], "Things Look Different Here" [2], "We Love Dreamers" [3] Katr67 03:40, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alabama

"Stars Fell On" is now on the Alabama state license plate. Heart of dixie was taken off complaints this promoted racism (think the South Carolina Flag) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.29.126 (talk) 18:14, August 12, 2006

[edit] NC state slogan

On license plates we use First in Flight, First in Freedom.

Are you sure it is "A Better Place to Be; Raise Up"

These are two separate slogans. The first is referred to at www.nc.gov, and "Raise Up" seems to actually be from a rap song, so I'm removing it. According to worldlicenseplates.com, the license plate says "First in Flight" but not "First in Freedom". Katr67 23:16, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maryland is for crabs?

Maryland is for crabs? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.9.186.138 (talk) 20:51, November 8, 2006

See Virginia is for Lovers and Blue crab. According to the blue crab article: "The blue crab is the official Maryland State Crustacean, and the tourism slogan 'Maryland is for Crabs' can be found on all manner of souvenir items in the state." I can't find any source that says this is an official tourism slogan, however, so I'm removing it from the list. Katr67 21:39, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
