[edit] Jeti/2 license
Can someone confirm the license of Jeti/2? (NaturalBornKiller 18:15, 5 March 2006 (UTC))
license Jeti/2: GPL as the german maintainer states, see also license.txt found in inst-dir--212.227.103.74 19:51, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Commercial
Why is the non-Open-Source part called "Commercial"? An open source program *can* be commercial too. I think that "propietary" fits better. Also, I'd rather call free software "free software" instead of "open source". jbc 12:08, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- I also dislike us propogating stallmans perversion of the word propietry though (he defines it as anything that doesn't have the particular freedoms he considers important). The current 3 way split makes sense as free software that is used by any significiant user base is in practice always availible for free (as one of the required freedoms is the ability to redistribute it for free). [edit] Comparisson of Jabber clients
Is it worthwhile to have a page Comparison of Jabber clients? Or is it better to expand Comparison of instant messengers?--Hhielscher 09:38, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- There also is a Comparison of IRC clients, So why not? I also think it would be a good idea to split Comparison of instant messengers into Comparison of MSN compatible clients, Comparison of ICQ compatible clients, Comparison of Yahoo! compatible clients, and so forth. This will also solve the problem that Comparison of instant messengers is too big...otherwise I guess that list will grow to more than 100kb. Other reason: you cannot really compare clients that use different protocols. It is a bit comparing apples with oranges. --NaturalBornKiller 00:07, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- As the list is really long it would be very helpful to have such a list. I even expected it as I entered the site. --Marco Bakera 20:16, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Tables are ugly
I really don't like the use of tables for this list. According to Wikipedia:When to use tables, tables should not be used for long lists or simple lists. I feel that this is an example of both. The table contains un-needed information (such as links to home pages) so it is really a very simple list. The Free Software list is pretty long so it could pass as a long list.
In any case I strongly prefer the list version, not the table version. Anyone else agree? --Mosquitopsu 06:21, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
Would you still be able to mantian information on the platform it runs on, (ex: windows, Java, etc.) 206.176.143.67 00:34, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] elechat
Do someone knows the license of eleachat (see http://sourceforge.net/projects/elechat )? NaturalBornKiller 21:31, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Yabber
Do someone knows the license of Yabber?: http://www.yabber.org/ NaturalBornKiller 19:08, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] More clients to add
The list is still not complete; see e.g. the Jabber software map and use the Internet Archive to find the websites of the discontinued projects. NaturalBornKiller 19:37, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Remove the links
Wikipedia is not a storage for useless (or useful!) links! Let's remove the external links, make it a simple list, and remove the spam template. 83.233.144.116 10:54, 29 April 2007 (UTC) Hey, that's really me :) ❝Sverdrup❞ 10:55, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
I like the links. I was curious of the diffrent IM Clients for Jabber avalible and the links having been provided probebly saved time from me having to search up every name I was interested in and find the site. If we are not going to provide a detail explination of each client. Then at least lets provide links 206.176.143.67 00:29, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Everybody loves a good linkfarm. Unfortunately Wikipedia strives hard not to be one. See WP:NOT#LINK for more information. That URL column needs to be deleted. (Requestion 00:55, 22 May 2007 (UTC))
To Wafulz: good job on the cleanup and thank you. ✤ JonHarder talk 15:56, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- I don't care about the URLs being removed (though, I think this makes the list less useful for researching reasons in an end user's point of view), but I don't like it at all that also the clients without a Wikipedia article are removed. I can tell you that it took me a lot hours to collect all the different clients and list them on that page. So, by removing them there now is *no* list in English with an overview of 99% of all Jabber clients and by this you downgrade IMHO the objectivity of Wikipedia because you only list popular Jabber clients in this list. Remark: this article was not meant as linkspam, it was just meant as a complete overview of *all* available clients to replace the subjective listing of only a few popular open source clients in the article about Jabber. So, you now also made that I stop updating this list (I don't want all my hard work to be removed again) in favour of only updating the Dutch version of this list. That is what I wanted to say... --NaturalBornKiller 12:56, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

- Well Wikipedia's purpose isn't to document the existence of every Jabber client- it's just to list those that have enough established notability to merit an article.-Wafulz 13:03, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- And how will you decide which client is notable and which not...that feels like a subjective decision to me.... --NaturalBornKiller 18:02, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
