[edit] Jarls of Iceland

Does anyone have any information on the Jarls of Iceland. The men sent by the King of Norway to rule Iceland after 1261? Please see: Norwegian noble titles. Inge 17:07, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I have been looking for the same. I also wonder if, strictly speaking, the "union with the Kingdom of Denmark" shouldn't be moved to 1814 and forward. It wouldn't affect the kings, obviously. -- Nidator T / C 00:52, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
As far as I remember, there only ever was one jarl in Iceland, Gizurr Somethingsson, who was sent by Håkon Håkonsson. But this is only from memory - if you have access to Kulturhistorisk leksikon for nordisk middelalder it's in there.--Barend (talk) 09:23, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
The reason why I ask is because in the article on Gissr Þorvaldsson it says that he was made Jarl of Iceland by Håkon Håkonsson in 1258, four years before Iceland submitted to Norwegian rule, and held the title until his death in 1268, and in the article on Norwegian noble titles it says that the title was abolished in 1308. That leaves a gap of 40 years. If true then either the position was vacant for that time, which seems odd, or someone else held it. -- Nidator T / C 00:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you might find it odd. But I seem to remember that that's what happened. I'll check it though, unless someone beats me to it.--Barend (talk) 13:16, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Good! If it turns out that there were others then it might warrant an article. -- Nidator T / C 13:21, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Finally got around to checking "Kulturhistorisk leksikon for nordisk middelalder". It says there is no evidence for any more jarls in Iceland after Gissur died in 1268. It was in the laws that the king could appoint one, but he seems not to have done so, which I assume the Icelanders were quite happy with...--Barend (talk) 15:35, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
That is a reference to the Icelandic law, I presume. Anyway, thanks for looking it up. -- Nidator T / C 10:17, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
The book said "King Magnus' law", so presumably his law for Iceland.--Barend (talk) 15:47, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
