[edit] Title

Shouldn't it be "Doctor Who spaceships"? —Jonathan D. Parshall (talkcontribs) 08:17, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Nope. It's to allow for things such as atmospheric craft as well you see which where never actually identified as being space capable ;-) Matthew Fenton (talk  contribs) 08:34, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Are you going to include the SS Bernice, then? :) —Jonathan D. Parshall (talkcontribs) 10:49, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
If you'd like to then sure ;-), I think it is a good idea to include anything ship like.. thats just my opinion though.. maybe we should split into two level 2 headers though (==, Space ships, Oceanic ship?)? Matthew Fenton (talk  contribs) 10:54, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Good idea, but a thought just occurred to me, how about "List of Doctor Who vehicles"? Then we could include stuff like Bessie. It seems to me that "ships" is just tad too limited and Bessie doesn't really strike me as a "item" —Jonathan D. Parshall (Talk | contribs) 11:31, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Good idea! I've done the move :-) Matthew Fenton (talk  contribs) 11:33, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Would vehicles such as the scooter from The Idiot's Lantern count? cyclosarin 02:23, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] images

I've played with the images a bit as they where over-lapping and removed the TARDIS one as its on TARDIS. Matthew Fenton (talk  contribs) 13:42, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Genesis Ark

Current Genesis Ark page should redirect here and perhaps the information here should be expanded to include some of the older Genesis Ark information.

[edit] UNSS Valiant

I was wondering about the location of the UNSS Valiant: according to the coordinates, it is hovering over Germany. Is there any special reason for this, have I missed something in an episode? If I haven't missed any detail, it is probably NOT hovering over a sovereign state. To me it seems far more likely that it would hover over international waters, especially, the Atlantic. The only thing I remember from The Sound of Drums is that they mention that it's about an hours flight away from the airport, which is probably located near London. This means that the Valiant should be well over the Atlantic, about 800 kilometres west off the coast of the UK. Can somebody verify?George Adam Horváth 17:38, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of vehicles

There seems to be a new series bias to this page with editors removing vehicles that appeared in the 'classic series'. Considering many of the vehicles I added to this page have more screen time than some of the newer vehicles that said editors deem more notable, especially spaceships and space stations onboard which whole stories were set, I cannot understand why others regard them as less notable. One reason given for removal of entries were that they were empty. However, they were removed before I had chance to write an individual entry for each vehicle. Wolf of Fenric 17:03, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

When I originally created the article it was focussed mainly on space/air ships of both the new and original Doctor Who. I see no valid reason to remove your information, though. I am worried the article may be getting messy now. Perhaps a secondary article should be created for the misc. vehicles (List of Doctor Who miscellaneous vehicles), it could be tabulated and contain information such as appearance (and a succinct overview, if needed). Matthew 17:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
There is no "bias" regarding old versus new. It is purely a question of notability. A vehicle such as "Bessie" is clearly noteworthy - it is a distinct part of the Doctor Who lore. On the other hand, the deleted text contained many vehicles that are clearly non-notable. There was nothing special about Martha Jones' car, for example - it was just a car that the characters were riding in. The same applies to Mickey's Beetle, and the other deletions: they were just a means for getting from point A to point B. The characters don't talk about the vehicles, or mention them as being anything special. There are no unique features of the particular vehicles that help in the plot. As such, mentioning them in this list is akin to adding vast quantities of trivia. (For comparison, we don't list the clothing characters wear in each episode, unless it too is unique and noteworthy.) --Ckatzchatspy 19:02, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

With regards to empty entries: it's simple enough to prepare a section in a sandbox and then put the finished thing in the article. That way, there's no argument about lack of content. Mark H Wilkinson 19:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

In response to Ckatz's point, it strikes me as odd that vehicles such as the Ark from The Ark, the Wheel from The Wheel in Space and R1C from Underworld are considered less noteworthy than the Chula Ambulance or the Family of Blood's spaceship. By Ckatz's criteria set out above, such vehicles surely count as notable. They are talked about, display special qualities and aid the plots. In the cases of the Ark and the Wheel, the very fact that they feature in the serials' titles suggests notability. Wolf of Fenric 19:37, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Along the lines of what Matthew has written, how about introducing a table at the bottom of this page for miscellaneous vehicles? It would certainly look better than what I admit were messy contributions I made. Perhaps it could look like this:

Miscellaneous vehicles

Vehicle Serial Notes
Ark The Ark A generational ship inhabited by humans and Monoids.

Wolf of Fenric 19:59, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

If a vehicle (or object) is central to the plot, or its unique properties are key, then a case can be made for inclusion. Incidental vehicles have no place, however. Tanks, helicopters, and the like may have a certain "cool" factor, but the mere fact a tank (for example) is used does not necessarily mean it needs to be specifically listed here. --Ckatzchatspy 20:01, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Aircars from "The Pirate planet"

OK. They may not have been used that much, but in The Pirate Planet, there were several aircars used or mentioned. Romana mentioned that their were aircars on Gallifrey, and that she got one for her 70th birthday. Should this be included? Orville Eastland 23:21, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Valiant

I say that it's important that the death of a fictional US President on the Valiant be mentioned. Look how important that road in Dallas is. I really hope I'm making sense. Lots42 10:27, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
