A Liston knife is a type of knife used in surgical amputation; it is often mentioned in scenarios involving Jack the Ripper because of the knife's popularity in surgery and its exceeding sharpness.
The knife was named after a British military surgeon in the Crimean war, who devised the instrument to aid in emergency amputations under battlefield conditions.
