Soon after their introduction in 1840, postage stamps became philatelic objects, and philatelic fakes and forgeries to the detriment of the collector became a problem. The first book about the topic was written by Jean-Baptiste Moens from Belgium De la falsifications des timbres-poste in 1862. Shortly thereafter Edward Loines Pemberton published Forged Stamps: How to detect them and Robert Brisco Earée Album Weeds. Stamps produced by notable forgers have become collectibles, as well.
